Locus I

£45.00

This locus influences pheomelanin, the red pigment in coat colour. A mutation in the MFSD12 gene dilutes pheomelanin without affecting eumelanin, so black areas stay black while red areas fade to cream or white. The intensity can vary.

Description

Locus I (Intensity locus)

The I locus influences the intensity of pheomelanin (red/yellow pigment).

  • i = recessive mutation in the MFSD12 gene

  • Dogs with i/i genotype show diluted pheomelanin
    – dark red becomes cream or white

  • It does not affect eumelanin
    – black areas remain black

  • The degree of lightening can vary between individuals

  • This mutation does not cause albinism, because nose, eye and skin pigmentation remain normal

Inheritance:

  • Recessive → a dog must inherit two copies (i/i) for the diluted colour to appear

  • Carriers (I/i) look normal but can pass the mutation to their offspring
